Textile shackles by Design 4 Sea   shackles-fra   shackles-esp

Presentation

Our experience: after 5000 miles non-stop sailing in mild conditions, we already had broken 3 metal hanks. We replaced these hanks by improvised dyneema shackles. Soon, we had installed textile shackles everywhere on board.

None of these home-made shackles broke. Almost all of them are still here after 14.000 miles in strong conditions and 2 years of use.
See Matxitxako-Horn

Textile shackles are light, strong, versatile, silent (no rattling, no shocks on deck) and pleasant to the touch in cold and hot weather.

Installing and removing textile shackles is straightforward. It requires both hands but no tools. This is somewhere between snaphooks and classical shackles.

Shackles by Design 4 Sea

Hand-made and robustly built

double dyneema braid, one inside the other;
specific knots for each rope diameter, to improve the resistance;
multiple sizes: S, M, L ;
wide loop for ease of use;
anti shafing tubular strap to resist abrasion and hold the knob in position.

Innovative shackles

ultra light shackles with an outstanding breaking load;
anti-shafing system (e.g., for sail hanks);
stretchable shackles for a firm grip on ropes, shrouds, etc.

From left to right: ultra light (model KD2S), anti-shafing - sail hank (model KD4SP), stretchable (model KLA2S)

Anti-shafing tubular strap

A thick tubular strap made of braided polyester protects the dyneema from abrasion.

The strap is removable and can be replaced to enlarge the lifespan of the shackle (tubular strap sold separately).

Safety. The anti-shafing strap prevents the knob from slipping out of the loop. The shackle
will never open alone.

Anti-shafing tubular strap. From left to right: open, closed, secured (model KD4MP).

hard times for metal hanks !

KD4SP replaces metal sail hanks. Here on a genoa.

Sail hanks need to be light, strong and abrasion-resistant (friction around the stay when pulling up and down the sail, permanent rotation...).

Textile shackles are lighter and stronger than metal hanks, and thanks to the tubular strap they are also resistant to abrasion.

Size: measured when folded. Internal diameter ~ 2/3 of size, e.g. 18cm -> 12cm diameter.

Workload can be applied safely 100% of time. Rupture load always higher than 2 x workload.

Disclaimer: the textile shackles are not officially certified for life-dependent applications like wearable safety devices or mast climbing devices.

Stretchable shackles: elongation ~40%. Models KLA2L KLA2XL: several positions, i.e., multiple diameters.

Ultra light (KD2S, KD2M)

When weight matters

Made of a double 2mm dyneema braid, they can be installed even in the smallest deck gear (overall diameter of the doubled braid ~3mm).

They have an outstanding resistance:  rupture load above 780kg for a workload of 350kg.

Provided with a safety washer.

Sizes: S (6cm folded, ~4cm diameter), M (10cm folded, ~7cm diameter).

Standard (KD4SP, KD4MP, KD4LP)

The universal shackle: KD4MP

KD4M mounted on a backstay tackle (tubular strap removed)

Made of a double 4mm dyneema braid, with a workload of 500kg and a rupture load above 1000kg the standard shackles are suitable in most of the cases.

Provided with removable anti-shafing tubular strap.

Sizes: S (6cm folded, ~4cm diameter), M (10cm folded, ~7cm diameter), L (15cm folded, ~10cm diameter)

Heavy duty (KD6MP, KD6LP)

When load matters

Made of a double 6mm dyneema braid, with a workload of 1000kg and a rupture load above 2000kg the high load shackles are suitable for safety devices (e.g., lifelines) as well as high load pulleys, tackles...

No need for higher workloads: if 1000kg are not sufficient, use the large model (KD6L) and make 2 turns: the workload is now about 2000kg.

Provided with removable anti-shafing tubular strap.

Sizes: M (12cm folded, ~8cm diameter), L (16cm folded, ~11cm diameter)

Stretchable (KLA2S, KLA2M, KLA2L, KLA2XL)

Firm grip and high resistance

Tying a flag (KLA2S), securing a mainsail (KLA2XL),
removing slack from a flying backstay (KLA2L)

Sandows (elastic loops) are banned from most of the boats: too elastic, too weak, there is a permanent risk of breaking and lashing back.

No risk with the stretchable shackles. Tie a flag on a halyard or a backstay, remove the slack from flying stays, sheets and halyards, secure sails on the boom or on the deck, the stretchable shackles  will stand the hardest conditions without breaking.

Made of a doubled  2.7mm technora-latex elastic rope, they have a limited elasticity in order to minimize back lashing (40% elongation) and a high rupture load, above 450kg for a workload of 150kg.

Provided with a robust, easy to grasp stopper knob, made of a knot, a stainless steel washer and a nylon knob.

Sizes: S (8cm folded ~5cm diameter), M (16cm folded, ~10cm diameter), L (25cm folded, ~16cm diameter, several positions), XL (50 cm folded, ~33cm diameter, several positions)
